Niagara Regional Housing (NRH) Announces Affordable Housing Intensification Project on Roach Avenue in Welland
NIAGARA REGION, May 11, 2018 – Today Niagara Regional Housing (NRH) and the City of Welland announced the site of NRH’s intensification project on Roach Avenue in Welland. The project will see four aging NRH Public Housing units (two semi-detached homes) replaced with six stacked row houses (12 units):
- eight two-bedroom units (one accessible)
- four three-bedroom units (one accessible)
"At the end of April, there were more than 400 family households waiting for affordable housing in Welland", said NRH Board Chair Henry D’Angela, "This intensification project is a perfect opportunity to make better use of space and maximize unit potential on the corner of Roach Avenue and Martin Street. It will make a positive difference in the lives of the tenants who will live here and it will also enhance the neighbourhood as a whole."
With a high demand for affordable housing, supply continues to be unmatched with need in Niagara. Increasing the supply of adequate, suitable and affordable housing is a focus of Niagara’s Housing and Homelessness Action Plan (HHAP) and a high priority for NRH.
"This is great news for the City of Welland as there is an extremely high demand for affordable housing", said Mayor of Welland Frank Campion, “We are happy that Niagara Regional Housing was able to leverage properties they already own to add eight additional units for families here in Welland."
Demolition of existing units will begin in June and construction is set to begin at the end of the summer (2018). The new buildings are forecast to be complete in February of 2019. Tenants of the units scheduled for demolition have been transferred to other NRH properties and will have the first right to transfer back to the new units.
Niagara Regional Housing has been administrator of affordable housing for Niagara Region since 2002.
